A little over a month ago I started a series of digital paintings created on the iPad using the painting application ArtRage. I chose this application because of the natural media tools that mimic actual paint, the variety of brushes, tools, styles, and layer options, as well as the ease of use.
The process to create these is really straight forward. Research a specific car. Sketch out the image in rough form on paper with a real pencil. Create a very tight pencil drawing. Scan that drawing. Import it to ArtRage, and paint it out. It’s not a fast process, but it works.
One thing I noticed after finishing this project is the fact that the paintings got tighter toward the end. The level of detail increased, and the style tightened up quite a bit. The funny thing is, as I looked at the completed set, I like the earlier images better. The Bell Special has a much more painterly quality to it. Lesson learned…
