West Side Local. 17th and Summit Kansas City, MO

westside localI’m loving this place.

West Side Local is located at 17th and Summit just North East of the Blue Bird Cafe,  Look for locally grown foods, a fantastic beer selection, wonderful ambiance, and a “Beer Garden”. Oh yeah!

Owned by Troy McEvers, a Kansas City native has worked in the restaurant industry for 17 years. Recently returning from San Francisco.

Executive Chef Rick Martin has roots in Lawrence Kansas and worked with Troy at Free State Brewery. Which might explain the pairing of menu items to local beers rather than wines. “Beer has carbonation and clears the palate”, Troy explains,  “wine sticks to it.” The restaurant , committed to cuisine, community and culture, sources food from local farmers and is mindful of it’s carbon footprint.

The menu is friendly with inspired tatstes and pairings. Deviled eggs, are a unique stand out on the menu, ialong with house made pickles. in the two times we have been there meal began with a mixed sampling of the deviled eggs, assorted cheeses, pickles, and samples from the charchuterie plate.  On our first vistit we tried the seared rare salmon burger with potato salad that was to die for. The potato salad rivaled my grandmothers recipe which is hard to do. The salmon was perfectly prepared and lightly seasoned with a delicate flavor. We finished our meal with house made peach sorbet, made from locally grown Missouri peaches. Pure heaven. Our send trip included fall off the bone beef short ribs, with mashed potato, carrots, and sweet corn. The locally grown produce just accentuates the goodness of the food. The flavors are just so spot on. With both meals I had the Boulevard Tank 7 Ale which I have to say is becoming one of seasonal faves.

Less than 2 miles from my house, this is rapidly becoming one of my regular spots. They take reservations on tables of 6 or more only, and it is becoming a bit of a hot spot for the trendies. The whole hot new place factor. The beer garden packs out in nice weather so if you are going be prepared to wait a bit, or head out early.

I’m giving this place 4 out of 5 stars. Westside_Local_Kansas_City
