LOMOX Limited, an OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology innovation and development company based in the United Kingdom, has announced one of the coolest products I have seen in a while. Light Emitting Wallpaper.

Using a flexible OLED surface, the wallpaper requires a very low operating voltage, about 3 to 5 volts, so it can be powered by green alternatives like localized solar and wind.

Beyond the wallpaper use, this product would be perfect for things like traffic warning signs, or even overhead bank lighting applications. Mark Williamson, Director of Innovations at the Carbon Trust, said: “Lighting is a major producer of carbon emissions. This technology has the potential to produce ultra efficient lighting for a wide range of applications, tapping into a huge global market. It’s a great example of the kind of innovation that makes the UK a hotbed of clean technology development. We’re now on the look-out for other technologies that can save carbon and be a commercial success.”

Lomox has developed new technologies that extend the life of the OLED product giving it a lifespan significantly longer than traditional fluorescent lamps.The technology will also be more efficient (producing 150 lumens/watt) as it only emits light along one axis. OLEDs can produce a more natural looking light than other forms of lighting.

I see this product, and immediately think about all of the surface design applications it could be used for beyond simple wallpaper patterns. Imagine applying this to table tops, or counters, base board lighting, automotive interiors, instrumentation, electronics, etc. Just think, because it is OLED it can produce millions of colors. Think if your wallpaper were connected to a video source. Can you say infinite display possibilities? I knew you could.

According to the Lomox press release, this product should be on the market in mass by 2012. I can’t wait to see it.
