Tonight I sat on the back deck for an hour or so while waiting for the computer to catch up on uploading a series of video files to a clients server. While sitting outback I got to witness what seemed like millions of fireflies lighting up the field behind my house. Thousands of sparks popping in and just above the 4 foot high tall grass that has sprung up in the last month.
I can’t wait to see what happens. I just started seeing them about a week ago, so I am thinking i have about another 2 to 3 weeks before their short life cycle is up. I hope I’m wrong. I hope I get to see them for the rest of the summer, but I know it is fleeting. It’s funny while watching them, I drifted back to childhood, running through the neighborhood chasing fireflies and collecting them in jars so they could light up your room at night as you drifted off to sleep. I have such vivid memories of playing in what seemed to be the late night, when it was really only 9 or maybe 10 PM. Running up and down the front and back lawns of suburbia with my brothers, and other neighborhood kids chasing lightning bugs.
I wanted to find a low light video camera to capture what I am seeing tonight, but it really doesn’t matter. What I wanted to capture was the feeling I had as a kid, and what I got tonight was pretty close. I guess you would have had to be here to understand.
