Artificial Tornadoes by Ryan Hopkinson.

As a guy that grew up in the Midwest, in “Tornado Alley”, I have a special fascination with tornadoes. My fascination with tornadoes is something that is shared by photographer Ryan Hopkinson.

Hopkinson has teamed up with Lightning and Kinglyface to produce a series of images of waist high tornados that were created with colored smoke and a special extractor fan. The colorful images that they captured are truly fascinating and beautiful.

“I wanted to create these artificial tornadoes for real so I collaborated with Lightning + Kinglyface as i’m not only a big fan of their work I also knew they would be up for the challenge. It was at first a game of trial and error, delicately balancing the right artificial environment with the correct amount of rising smoke. Any slight wind changes in the studio or on the surface would knock the vortex and stop it from forming. In total we managed to create twenty tornadoes, each around 4ft in height all with their own personalities and weight. The delicate nature of our creations was a big juxtaposition in many ways between natures own, but being able to create one and see it up close, regardless of its size and power was mesmerising.”
