It’s a rainy Wednesday afternoon, and I’m creatively spent. My brain has been drained by a fast paced time-consuming project that has left me mentally spent. So I set out to find some creative inspiration, and refuel for the second half of the week. While cruising around on Vimeo I came across the video below and a link the project breakdown on Behance.
All the Things from Chris Guyot is a wonderful animated short filled with oversaturated colors, fluid animations, great sound design, and absolutely no real story. I love it. 8 short vignettes in a minute and a half that left me with a smile on my face and the desire to create something just as fun.
“All The Things” is a collection of individual narratives, unified by a cohesive style.
Our intention was to work on a short, simple piece. As many of you know, sometimes personal projects evolve and take on a mind of their own. As the months rolled along, we found ourselves frequently going back and adding more content to each scene. We had a lot of fun allowing our imagination drive the development of the various narrative.
The video below from Sehsucht is one of those great examples of where technology and craft come together to create something that makes you question if it is 3D animation, stop motion, or a blend of the two. It turns out it was all done on the computer, but the effect is fantastic. Botht the finished video, and the making of are below showing you how it was done. The finished video looks like animated cut paper and is surprisingly convincing as something that was done with physical materials by hand. The animation was built using Cinema 4D and if you watch the making of video you can see how the team developed the sequence from storyboards, to style frames, to some intense animation sequences that capture the look of layered paper cutouts. Great stuff.
“PayPal isn’t just an online payment method, it is a licensed bank as well. Die Botschaft and SEHSUCHT Berlin developed a nice concept to communicate this and other facts about PayPal. Our main Character Mr. PayPal is explaining that PayPal is more than just a bank and shows the benefits of using it. We really had fun bringing him to live in this beautiful 3D paper cut world. The goal was to animate everything exactly like it would be done if animated by hand with stop motion techniques. This was a tedious and mind-bending challenge, but fun and every frame was worth the love and passion.”
Once again I am absolutely blown away by the quality of work that is being produced by students these days. I know the hardware and software are better than it was even ten years ago let alone twenty plus, but there is more to it than the simple mastery of your tool set. The story telling level is better, the understanding of atmosphere, and how to build tension, the editing, etc. The animated short below was created by a group of seven students at ISART DIGITAL, the Video Game and 3D Animation / VFX School for their graduation film The title “Poilus” means the hairy one. It is a term of endearment for a French WWI infantryman the main character of the film. This is really solid work, and I have no doubt this crew will go on to great things as they leave college and embark on a career in animation.

I am a huge fan of Cinema 4D, and it is pretty insane just how much the tool has grown with each new generation. I mean if you think about it, When Cinema 4D was released in 1993 for the Amiga it was a solid tool, but there is no way the software on an Amiga system could have produced anything like what is in the video below. Frankly, there were no real desktop tools that could have produced this, which just goes to show how far computer graphics have come, and how we take their power for granted most of the time. I have been working with graphic design, animation, and editing software for more than 20 years, and if someone had asked me to produce this back in 93 I would have laughed.
This video was created by ManvsMachine to showcase the new tools and functionality in Maxon’s latest release of Cinema4D. “Versus” is a CG short inspired by the dualities suggested in the studio’s own name. This is a visual stunner that not only features great CG animation, but some really solid sound design which helped inspire the video. If you have them, put on your headphones. If you don’t turn up the sound on your speakers. I’ve also include the making of video to show you how it was done.
The video below took a year to complete. Hyperrealistic statuettes of wrestling talent were hand sculpted in Maya and later shaded to look like marble. if you count the number of figures and then combine it with the environment they are placed in you’ll understand why. This is an enormous project for any team to tackle, but the end result is one solid promotion for Royal Rumble.
The Royal Rumble spot is a reimagined and rebranded rethink, conceptualized from the ground up to showcase one of the big four events that WWE produces throughout the year. It is a retelling of the storied past and grand moments from events past and those yet to be written. Perfectly paced, with a solid script and voice over the visuals hook you and pull you into the spot.
“Labored on over the course of a year, hyperrealistic statuettes of wrestling talent were hand sculpted and then later shaded to look like marble in Maya. An enormous and detailed tableau provides the backdrop for the reimagining, referencing structures from ancient kings on the left and progressing to more modern structures that nod towards the robber barons of the industrial revolution. A leitmotif of ornamental detailing weaves itself throughout the piece creating a cohesion that culminates with the apex, a ring that all the competitors aspire to conquer.”

What a nice combination of typography, 3D animation, and bikes. The video below is from Marcel Piekarski. It is a personal project he designed highlighting two things he loves, bicycles and type. He has created an entire alphabet, with posters and still frames for each letter here. This is such a wonderful little project. I hope someone is smart enough to distribute this for him as an actual typeface for designers and artist to use.
First a disclaimer. I have not seen the movie Deadpool and probably won’t. That doesn’t mean that I can’t be impressed with the VFX in the film. Take a look at the VFX breakdown below and you’ll understand why. There is so much computer graphics, and post work going on that it makes you ask, is this a live action movie, or an animation featuring some live characters in the scenes? The movie might have been bad (this is what my friends have told me so don’t get mad at me), but the VFX are pretty damn spectacular.
“Deadpool” marks the beginning of a new era for superhero films, and one sequence in particular was key to setting the tone. This is an in-depth VFX breakdown reel showcasing the behind-the-scenes efforts by the Atomic Fiction team. The work involved creating computer generated characters, vehicles, and an entire urban environment, for the thrilling car chase that kicks off this new franchise!
