3D Modeling

SculptGL. Cloud Based 3D Modeling.

As internet speeds become faster, and computers become more powerful more and more software is moving to the cloud. Less than 5 years ago SculptGL would have been almost impossible, but in todays world Fully functional, 3d workflow is coming to your browser. Right now this software runs at peak performance in Chrome, and with limited vertices limited to 65536 in Firefox 22. In Firefox 24 that limit will be gone though.

SculptGL is a web sculpting application, powered by WebGL and JavaScript. It features dynamic and adaptive topological tools for sculpting. Adaptive sculpting enables changes in the topological genus which allows the user to create holes and merges on the model. The software looks promising, and it looks like this is the wave of the future. Even 3D giant Autodesk is jumping on the band wagon.

“Hands” and “Cogs”.

Want a video to go viral? Well there is no magic formula. It helps though if you have very compelling content that is executed with extremely high production values. It also helps if you are using a similar formula to an online video that was off the charts about 10 years ago. One of the first viral video darlings. This is the case for Honda’s new spot titled “Hands”. Since it was published on July 3rd, it has grabbed 2,715,000+ views on YouTube alone. Not bad at all. Like I said it helps when your spot is well produced, and well thought out. This spot is. Along with the new “Hands” spot I have added the original “The Cog” below it incase you need a visual refresher.

“Fat” an Amazing Student Film from Supinfocom.

Every time I see a graduate project from the students at Supinfocom in Arles France, it makes me want to take a sabbatical and go back to school. This animated short film came out a couple of years ago, but I just found it this morning on Vimeo. Great story telling, character design, 3D modeling, animation, sound design and post production work. This is why this is one of the top schools in the world for learning this kind of thing.

Autodesk 123D Creature.

God I love living in an age when advances in technology are completely reshaping the way we create. As little as five years ago people would have laughed if you had told them you were going to create a 3D model on a hand held computer. They would have laughed more if you told them you were going to print a physical 3D object from the same device. Thanks to Autodesk you can actually do this.

I am completely blown away by 123 Creature, and just how powerful this tool is. Seriously, this software is pretty damn amazing. The results it produces are very good, and the fact that you can send your creations to a 3D printer… amazing.

“Now, for the first time, 123D Creature makes it easy for anyone to create a sophisticated creature on an iPad, and then have a 3D print delivered to their doorstep with a few swipes of their finger,” said Samir Hanna, vice president of Consumer Products at Autodesk. “With our 123D family of apps, we strive to put powerful 3D technology into the hands of anyone who wants to be creative, and we look forward to seeing the original creatures people will create and share with the community.”
