Pininfarina + Diavelo Join Forces To Create An E-Bike

“E-voluzione represents a perfect synthesis of our spirit: sporty character and eco-friendly soul” affirms Paolo Pininfarina. “Sporty and dynamic, a harmonic bikeable to guarantee high performances and great comfort”.

E-voluzione is the first electric bike born from the design collaboration between Pininfarina and bicycle makers Diavelo. E-voluzione was developed with a holistic design philosophy in mind. By that, I mean all the main components of the bike are integrated in the bike. By making a conscious effort to seamlessly integrate the battery, the mid-engine, the handlebar and stem, the cockpit, all the cables, the lighting system they have created not only a very aesthetically pleasing bike but one with a higher level of function. Thanks to better weight distribution and balance and a more comfortable and performing ride.

Using carbon fiber in the frame and in the bar, seat post, wheels, the bike is extremely light weight compared to the competition, weighing in at 35 pounds. I know, hefty by traditional bike standards, but fairly light for a motorized e-bike.

The carbon fiber frame is produced by using an innovative process known as  autoclave carbon fiber. Which produces a lighter stiffer frame allowing the bike to be more maneuverable and perform better.

The same level of innovation applies to other components that are used in the bike as well. The motor and transmission feature a high torque capacity and are fully integrated into the frame. The transmission is belt driven for an ultra quiet ride and reduces maintenance needs. In addition, they have integrated the patented battery into the frame, yet it is still fully removable for recharging or replacement if needed. The bike features hydraulic brakes and  Shimano components as well.

Type Cycle.

Animated TypeWhat a nice combination of typography, 3D animation, and bikes. The video below is from Marcel Piekarski. It is a personal project he designed highlighting two things he loves, bicycles and type. He has created an entire alphabet, with posters and still frames for each letter here. This is such a wonderful little project. I hope someone is smart enough to distribute this for him as an actual typeface for designers and artist to use.

Funked Up Fixies from Wolf and Lamm.

Dublin Ireland based bike builder “Funked Up Fixies” creates bright customizable bikes in a variety of ranges and styles. They are a young company filled with passionate  young and creative individuals that are into skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing and cycling. The fixed gear bikes they produce are built around the idea of  low maintenance, urban suitability, and fun. The video below was produced by Wolf & Lamm for Funked up Fixies an features a sexy, colorful and dramatic spot all set to a soundtrack of French pop music. The look captures the vibe of the company and the product they produce in a somewhat cheeky fashion. One that would probably never make it on prime time TV in America. The clip has a great look,  and just the right amount of humor to make it work.

Cyclo’s CYLO One.

Former head of design at Nike, Eric Duvauchelle has launched a new bicycle company that will be releasing it’s first bike in the next few months. “CYLO One” is a commuter bike that is still in it’s formative stages that you can help shape. If you go to the site you can take a quick survey that will provide feedback to the designers and allow for changes.

CYLO One” features an ultra lightweight aluminum frame for easy carrying, better handling, and a more solid ride in urban terrain. The bike features a 205 lumen built in LED light and a self activating brake light that uses an accelerometer to turn on as you slow down. The lights are powered by an internal dynamo to eliminate the need for any external power supply . In addition to the frame tech and lights, CYLO One is driven by a carbon belt drive so there is no need for oil, which means your pants stay clean well at least free of chain oil.

The Shimano 3 speed Nexus internal gear hub is paired with Shimano mechanical disc brakes for maximum stopping power. CYLO One will be introduced in 3 colors, currently black, white and red.  If you take the survey on the site, you can have input on things like more gears, more colors, extra features, and what things the smartphone app for the bike will have. Yes smartphone app for the bike.
