Friday Inspiration. “OFFF 2013 Cincinnati”.

While thousands of people head off to the SXSW in Austin this week, there is another conference taking place in Cincinnati. The multicultural design conference OFF 2013 started two days ago in the grand state of Ohio. The video below is the opening title sequence for the conference. It features great animation, video and CGI work plus really nice sound design. Do yourself a favore and watch this wearing headphones. Now with all that said, one of the things a video like this needs to do is build buzz, build excitement about the speakers, and the content that will be presented. I think this two minute short does that hands down. The visuals are exciting with titles juxtaposed in ways that make you want to see the speakers. All of this is enhanced by music and sound design that builds a certain amount of good tension. This video makes me wish I had gotten my act together and signed up for this conference when I had the chance.

Offf Festival has been a multicultural design conference event for years. From the beginning, I wanted to explore a different approach. Titles was executed with diverse ranges of techniques to underline sub-context, gathering different imagination, disciplines, mediums and artists.

Used techniques vary from computer graphics to live action, macro photography to photocopy art. One single concept unifies the variation. It is the simplicity. In contrast with the strong imagery typography plays a subtle role, placed in the centre with only two weight variations of a geometric typeface.

FontShop Plugins For Photoshop and now Illustrator.

As every graphic designer knows, fonts are expensive, and needed in quantity to do good work. Owning a vast library of fonts can be extremely expensive, but required in order to show your clients a variety of type stylings before taking a design concept to its final stages. Thankfully plugins for Creative Suite applications are starting to make it possible to browse and preview fonts from vendors directly within layouts without purchasing them first. This is huge for designers on tight budgets or not in a position to layout thousands of dollars on complete type libraries.

One of them, the FontShop plugin, which seems to have been stuck in a beta mode for a lifetime now, has now been extended to Mac and Windows Illustrator CS3-CS6.If you haven’t tried it, give it a shot. I have been using it with Photoshop since CS4, and it has been a lifesaver when dealing with needy clients that can’t make up their mind on a specific look for a project. Now I wish they would add InDesign, After Effects, and Premier support as well.

Sunday Morning Eye Candy. “Gentle Giants”.

Yesterday, well today actually, Daylight savings time ended. My body however is not like my mechanical alarm clock, so my reset switch seems to be a bit off. Maybe I am just in one of those moods. It’s kind of a gray day, and the weather is in flux.

I have spent most of the morning perusing video and motion graphics stuff looking for inspiration and visual stimulus. One of the things I came across on Vimeo was this little piece by Gentle Giants.
