Dogs

The Silence of Dogs in Cars, a Photographic Series from Martin Usborne.

I like dogs, and I like cars. What happens when you take a master photographer and turn him loose on dogs and cars? You get a series of extraordinary images of dogs in cars.

Martin Usborne has managed to capture the distinct personalities of dogs waiting for their owners with an incredible artistic eye. Each dogs expression and attitude from excitement or worry to fear are all captured as the canine subjects wait for the owners to return. Usborne has captured 40 photographs in this ongoing series which is currently being shown in London’s Little Black Gallery.  A few of the images are below, the series and the background behind the project are on Usborne’s website.

The Quick Brown Fox.

If you are a designer one of the first things you probably learned along with Lorem Ipsom is the sentence, The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog”. That sentence is by far one of the most popular greeking phrases used to see how fonts will look in your design work. It is the default for most font management systems, and it is a line that hardly anyone ever changes.

If you are a type geek, design geek, or poster lover, the people that run Typolution have created a fun poster built around that sentence using a number of fun fonts, and a cute little fox illustration. All done up with a slightly distressed look, and folded the old school way that broadsheet posters used to be delivered.

The poster measures approximately 20 by 27 inches and will set you back 19 Euro ($24.75) plus shipping. You can get it here if you so desire.

Action Cam Dog Mount

A few years ago I tried to mount a GoPro camera on my dog Cosmo. The results were less than stellar. Lets just say the footage made the “Blair Witch Project” look like it was shot with a steadycam rig. This morning a friend sent me a link to the “Action Cam Dog Mount” and I kind of want to give it another try. Maybe I could put together a whole series of videos with “CosmoVision”.

Action Cam Dog Mount is compatible with all major brand action cameras including GoPro, Contour, Sports-Vue, Drift, Intova, XTC, and Sony. The rig is fully waterproof, constructed of heavy duty nylon, features a durable and comfortable neoprene harness, with an adjustable mounting profile (high, low, back, forward). Action Cam Dog Mount is built with industrial strength clasps and webbing for durability even in the most rugged conditions (chasing squirrels through the park in Cosmos case).

Cosmo + Rat Poison = Not Good.

While on vacation in Santa Barbara, kristy and I had a bit of a scare with one of our dogs back in Kansas City. Since our house is on the market, inevitably we had four showings while we were out of town. Each time the house was shown, our house/dog sitter had to gather up the pups and get them out of the house for an hour or so. On Saturday she called and asked if it would be OK to take them to her place since we had two showings back to back lasting a couple of hours. We had no issue with it. We even said it’ll be a big adventure for Cosmo and Zoe to ride in the car and see a new place. For Cosmo, the adventure almost cost him his life.

Cosmo is a chow hound, and a very inquisitive little rat terrier mix. The house sitter has a small problem with mice at her place. Mice means traps or poison. Poison looks and smells like food. Cosmo’s walnut sized brain can’t tell the difference. The result… Cosmo ate rat poison, and had to go to the emergency vet. Thankfully the sitter caught him right away so he only ingested a small amount. Thankfully the emergency vet was less than five minutes from her place. They caught it in time and managed to neutralize the poison before it killed him. That said though, he’s not totally out of the woods. It will take up to four weeks before things are all clear.

Rat poisons work in three different ways. One kind causes violent seizures that cause the animal to spasm to death with violent convulsions as the nervous system fails. The second kind causes kidney failure. The third, the kind Cosmo ate, causes internal hemorrhaging so the animal bleeds to death internally as its organs fail.

The treatment for the third if caught in time is pretty straightforward. Pump the stomach, neutralize with fluids, charcoal, and vitamin K, wait and see. It takes about 48 hours to know what is going to happen, and because the poison creates hemorrhaging it leaves the animal in a state where they bruise and bleed easily for up to four weeks after the treatment. For the next month Cosmo will take daily doses of vitamin K, he’s not allowed to play or rough house with other dogs, and has to avoid any activity that could cause bleeding, or bruising. The good news is he’s alive. He made it without serious complications, and it looks like he’s going to be around for a long time.

Cosmo will now be known as Cosmo the Wonder Dog.

Sofa + Dog House = Dog House Sofa from “m.pup”

As a dog owner, I have a dilemma. I can let the dogs on the sofa, or I can ban them to a dog bed on the floor. I like having my canine companions next to me on the couch. Their presence next to me is relaxing, and comforting. The dilemma is this, I like the dogs on the couch, but I don’t like the hair and dirt they leave behind. My solution so far has been to cover the couch with a sheet to protect it, and take the sheet off when guests come over.

So, what happens when you combine a sofa and a dog house? You get the Dog House Sofa by Korean designer Seungji Mun. This wooden and upholstered sofa features a small cubby to the side with a padded dog bed under the arm. The cubby is large enough for two small dogs or maybe one medium sized dog. Simple modern design with natural materials combine with a modern aesthetic to create something new and fun. OK, I’d still have to cover this with a sheet for obvious reasons, but I love the idea, and I’d love to replace the sofa in the TV room with one.

The Dog House Sofa is a brand-new product in the 1st collection of the emotional pet furniture brand ”m.pup.”

“As numbers of nuclear families are increasing, pets coexisting with people are establishing themselves as companions of people. Currently in South Korea, people are raising over ten million pets. Now, the residential space is not only for humans, but also for pets. Between humans’ and pets’ residential space, “furniture” took the largest and the most important position. This “Dog House Sofa” is a tool to communicate and share feeling between human and pet. As a pet’s sight, this furniture is good enough for whetting the curiosity of pets. This sofa is composed of the solid wood(ash wood) and a fabric. And combining the sofa and dog house deliver the new space of communication between human and pet.”
