When I first watched this video on Vimeo, I was drawn in by the fantastic cinematography, and the atmosphere that is created in Alan Williams studio. The visuals hooked me but as his story, and discussion about process unfolded, I knew I was here for the full 8-minute duration. After watching it with the sound on, I muted the audio and watched it again, full screen and really looked at the way this was shot, edited, and composed. Ben Cox does a really nice job of framing his shots and using shallow depth of field to focus the viewer on specific elements within the frame. Lighting and color grading come together to really help enhance the story and create a mood that captures Alan Williams personality and the artwork he creates. This short has such a solid look, and great story hooks as well, it’s definitely going in the visual reference library for inspiration at a later date.
The weekend is here and in my neck of the woods its going to be unseasonably cool and rainy. That means I’ll be spending plenty of time inside reading and watching videos. One that I’ll be spending ten minutes with is the video below. Tony Zhou How does an Editor Think and Feel?. Zhou has been a professional editor for ten years, and in this ten minute video he discusses things like, How do you know when to cut?” Is it instinctual? Is it experience? Is it training? So how does an editor think and feel? I’m going to find out.
By now most people have seen or read about the ads that were featured on Super Bowl Sunday. While there wasn’t anything all that mind blowing, there were some spots that really entertained, one of them being the Mercedes-Benz Tortoise and Hare “Fable” commercial for the AMG GTS.
Both the commercial and the making of are below. It’s the making of/behind the scenes video that interests me. When I first saw the spot, I thought the entire piece was CG. I had no idea that there was any live footage blended in. Since all the animals are CG I simply figured the car and the environment were digitally created as well. I was wrong. When you watch the behind the scenes video, you see just how much actual footage was blended in with the digital components, and its really pretty impressive. Director Robert Stromberg and his crew did a masterful job of creating a visually stunning spot for Mercedes-Benz.
Since the dawn of civilization humans have always had a fascination with space. From that point where we first looked up at the night sky and pondered the stars and the vastness of the night sky, through today where we still explore the heavens. One of the more interesting takes on our fascination with the heavens and space is how it has been portrayed in film, especially in the last 50 years. As special effects have progressed from the ground breaking2001: A Space Odyssey”, to today’s blockbuster “Interstellar” the portrayal of space in film is one of amazing visuals and fantasies drawn out of human experience and imagination. The video below is wonderful edit of just how space has been portrayed in the movies. At almost 4 minutes in length it’s worth watching. Now can you name all of the movies referenced here?
This is such a simple idea, and it is executed so well. Each of the stingers for the 10th annual Al Jazeera International Documentary Film Festival were inspired by the the photography of Pol Ubeda Hervas. Director Omar Khalifa the metaphor of empty shoes as a testament to those filmmakers who are filling them and creating phenomenal documentaries around the world. The shots are simple. A slow, small tracking camera movement, with the action taking place in the shadow. Each visual represents an individual award: Best Director, Best Cinematography, Editing, Jury Award etc. Once again keeping it simple renders solid results. Love them.

As someone who is deeply rooted in graphic design, who’s career began with hand lettering before computers, and is insanely fascinated by video, storytelling, and motion graphics, the video below makes me all happy inside. Gentleman Scholar has produced a video for HP that is chocked full of killer typography, amazing shots, solid editing, and graphic design. The short spot is timed and paced so fluidly, with a soundtrack and voice over that help keep you focused on the visuals. Love, love, love this.
Oftentimes we find that our creativity is reduced to the footprint of our computer screens. But what happens when the digital and tactile work in tandem? Teaming up with 180LA, Gentleman Scholar explored this notion with piece below for HP’s new “Sprout 3D-scanning PC.” Using handcrafted vignettes that make up the spot, and presenting a new frontier in creativity: “where digital innovation meets tangible reality, a world in which imaginations take flight.”
MATEL has taken a creative and effective way to capture two of the greatest cities in the world, Paris and New York. The video below was shot on his Canon 5D Mk III and edited together in a split screen format to show the similarities and differences of these two modern metropolises. Using realtime and time-lapse sequences MATEL stitches the two cities together with images that merge, intersect, and juxtapose each other. I couldn’t find any information on the editing and post processing techniques used to finish the film. I’m thinking it was pretty straight forward since it was all shot on the same camera and edited by one individual. Once a gain a simple yet powerful and creative idea beats special effects and heavy post processing. Enjoy.
