Rolex has launched a new online video through its YouTube channel titled “The Rolex Way”. The two minute spot features a blend of live action footage, CG, and slow motions shots, combined with creative editing, and a well written script. The clip starts with a blend of CG papers floating past what looks like a live action shot of the Rolex headquarters.This entire opening scene could all be CG but it looks like a blend of the two. Moving through to an interior shot there is a tribute to the founder before a really nice post move into the live action shot of a person forging a rolex casement, with a really nice time re-mapped shot of hot molten steel hitting the crucible before swinging back to the pages of rRolex history and more solid CG work. This is a really well thought out spot with nice camera moves, timing, and a script that reinforces the brand, the quality of the product and the dedication to producing some of the worlds finest time pieces. Nice work for the folks at Rolex.
I like, and own a number of fine timepieces. I also used to own a very nice Lambretta back in the day. Actually I wish I still had my TV 175, but alas it went away years ago, and I simply don’t have the time and patience to maintain one these days. The scooter is not the subject of this post, neither are luxury timepieces. This post does however combine Lambretta, and watches.
Lambretta, still manufactures motor scooters, although none of them in my opinion are as iconic as the classics from the 1960’s. That doesn’t mean they aren’t stylish designs, I just prefer the look of the vintage scooter. Lambretta like so many other brands has branched out over the last few years and now extends their name to lifestyle accessories that help promote the primary brand. In this case Lambretta has developed a line of Swiss made watches along with a handful of other fashion accessories.
These watches are modern fashion accessories with a Lambretta inspired retro twist. The watch collection is clearly inspired by the look, design, and spirit of Lambretta scooters. The watches feature unique designs that are inspired by Lambretta’s racing history and mod scooter culture of the 1950’s and 60’s. While I wouldn’t compare these to something like a Rolex, they are fun, and the retro design styling looks great. The watches range from the simple minimalist “Franco: design, to the racing inspired chronograph “Imola”. The entire collection has a really nice look to it, and they appear to be well constructed with solid materials. Like the Lambretta scooter, these watches are eye-catching, and have an affordable price point.
I like watches. The craftsman ship that goes into a fine time piece like a Rolex, Tag Heuer, Pannerai, or Patek Phillipe is truly outstanding. I also like my smartphone. Now the craftsmanship that goes into the smartphone isn’t the same as a hand made watch, but the design experience that goes into the user interface, form factor, user experience etc. is every bit as detailed. As far as I am concerned on the iPhone it is.
Over the last decade or so, watch sales have declined, and the watch industry blamed mobile phones as the number one culprit. Who needs a watch when your phone has a clock right? The good news for watch makers is, watch sales are on the rise, and that leads me to the “Touch Skin Watch” designed by Niels Astrup.
Touch Skin was awarded the third place prize in the Samsung sponsored 2012 Design That Performs competition, and rightly so. The design of the watch is clean and classic keeping true to it’s analog roots.
Touch Skin weighs around 80 grams, and features a 16GB micro SD RAM which is upgradable. The prototype watch runs on a multi-core ARM or Nvidia Tegra Type II/III processor. The watch’s face is covered in 0.46mm thick Gorilla glass which covers the 16 million color multitouch screen. The case is made from anodized aluminum with the bracelet constructed from natural FSC-certified rubber.
