Spring

Pulse, 3 Weeks Into Winter and I’m Longing For Spring.

Here we are 4 days into 2017, and officially 3 weeks into winter. Tomorrow, we are supposed to get 4 inches of snow, and the high temps are going to maybe hit 20 degrees, which frankly has me longing for my favorite time of the year, mid-May through early July. All of this got me to thinking about the powerful thunderstorms that roll through the midwest fueled by warm moist air blowing up from the Gulf of Mexico and colliding with a cold front rolling in off of the Northern Plains. That got me to searching the internet for some video footage to warm my chilled bones and remind there are just 84 more days until spring.

My discovery this afternoon was the video below by Mike Olbinski. Shot in 4K, color graded to black and white, timed out to just under 5 minutes, it’s absolutely breathtaking. The fact that he had the idea of taking this in a new direction with a black and white post production just makes it. The soundtrack adds to the ominous power of the visuals and makes me long for the opportunity to be able to sit on the sun porch and watch this happening live. (not the tornado part, I like my house).

If you have the opportunity watch this in 4K on a larger TV. The visuals will knock your socks off. For more info on how Oblinski made it click through here.

Ah Spring. The Vernal Equinox Begins At 6:49 A.M. GMT.

It’s been a long, nasty, cold, snowy, can’t wait for you to end kind of winter here in the midwest and elsewhere. The good news is the first day of Spring starts at 6:49 A.M. Greenwich Mean Time. If you want to know where you are in the world, in relation to GMT, click here. I created the image below to give you a few facts about the equinox, but if you don’t care to bend your noodle with science here’s the short sweet version.

Tomorrow the Sun passes directly over the equator so day and night are equal in length. (That’s 12 hours each if you are feeling really lazy) Starting tomorrow the days get longer until the Summer solstice around June 21st. With the longer days, the Northern Hemisphere gets warmer. Warmer temps mean less snow and ice.

“The Craft of Movement”

Since it is a frozen waste land of bone crushing cold and snow outside I thought I would search Vimeo for some nice Spring clips. Something with green leaves and cherry blossoms. I thought it might make the 6 more weeks of winter a bit easier to tolerate. While cruising through a number of Spring related short films I came across ‘s Spring/Summer campaign fro 2013 and the making of film.

got together with NAM to capture the Craft of Movement in modern day Japan. The 60 second spot features some really nice slow motion footage great camera work and post. As you watch the film you see objects, and people suspended in air slowly moving through frozen objects. NAM made no attempt to hide the rigging and wires in the shoot, which ads a level of surrealism to the overall effect. If you are the least bit curious about how they made this, watch the making of video below. It takes almost 24 hours of studio time and compresses it into just a few minutes showing the magnitude and complexity of of the final piece.
